The LoL (Lots of LEDs) shield is based on an open-source design by Jimmie P. Rodgers. It uses charlieplexing to control 126 LEDs with a lot less control lines. Check out the following demo video (albeit green LEDs):
Assembly is easy, just solder the LEDs into the shield making note of the polarity. All 126 of them. Then the inline header pins for stacking into your Arduino. Take your time and be patient, the results are worth it.
Once assembled, you will need the LoL shield library for Arduino which can be found here.
