Now available from PMD Way are these fun and useful HD44780-compatible LCD modules with positive RGB color system. Displays consists of two rows of sixteen characters, with black text on an RGB LED backlight. 

Displays are logic-compatible for 3.3V and 5V DC, and LEDs have current-limiting resistors for 5V or lower operation.

Using the displays is just like any other parallel LCD you are used to, except instead of sixteen interface pins - there are eighteen. Pin 15 is the anode for the RGB LED backlight, then 16 to 18 are the cathodes for red, green and blue.

You can then treat the backlight like any normal RGB LED to create the color you need.
