Now available from PMD Way are these useful US5881 Hall Effect Sensors in packs of ten. They're used to detect when a magnet is nearby. Ideal for all sorts of motion detection, rotation counting, things like that. 

They're ideally tripped by a magnet. (We also sell magnets).
