Now available from PMD Way are these useful latching relays.These are different to normal relays in that they change state after receiving a single pulse, instead of needing a constant current through the coil to turn on, then no current to turn off.
All your system needs to do is send a 5V pulse over the coil pins for 4ms to turn the relay on, then do it again to turn it off, then again to turn it on. You get the idea.
