You can extend the distance between an infra-red receiver and your project, or for some A/V gear with the 38 kHz Infra Red Extender Cable - 1.5m from PMD Way. 

As you know a 38 kHz IR receiver has three wires - and this cable is the same, however the end is terminated with a 3.5mm stereo jack plug. Use a matching socket or just cut the plug off and wire it directly into your project.
