You can now easily measure temperature, humidity, soil moisture and light intensity remotely via WiFi with the ESP32 HiGrow-type Soil Sensor Board from PMD Way. 

This interesting board is designed to be placed into soil, and uses a capacitive soil sensor to measure moisture - along with a light sensor and DHT11 temperature/humidity sensor.

The host microcontroller is the popular ESP32 series and has a full USB interface via a CP2104. Power is provided by an 18650 LiPo battery (not included) and you can charge this via the micro USB socket.
